Tuning is the adjustment of the tension of all of your piano's strings to the correct pitch or frequency. This ensures that notes played in a musical interval (the distance between two notes) will sound in harmony.

Piano "tuning" does not involve the functioning of a piano's key mechanism. Other piano services such as repairs and regulation are not included in the price of a tuning. Tuning rate per piano is $120 (plus tax =  $129.90). Although basic piano tuning usually only takes 45-90 minutes, We recommend reserving two hours for complete service.

If the pitch of the piano is low to the point it needs extra work, pitch changes are $55. Customers with pianos that have not been tuned recently should expect a piano tuning fee between $120 and $150.

BASIC PIANO TUNING

ACTION REGULATION

The mechanism of the piano, like all machines, needs occasional regulation and adjustments of its internal parts. Over a period of time the action of a piano becomes less efficient and needs something similar to a tune up in a car.  This is known as regulation.

Regulation is the adjustment of the mechanical aspects of the pianos to compensate for the effects of wear, the compacting and settling of cloth, felt, and buckskin, as well as dimensional changes in wood and wool parts due to changes in humidity.

TONE REGULATION

Tone Regulation or "voicing" is the adjustment of a piano's tone or quality of sound. Tone can be changed without affecting the pitch. For example, turning the bass or treble knobs on your stereo changes the tone but does not alter the notes the musician recorded. A skilled piano technician can voice a piano to change its tonal personality from mellow to bright or robust to delicate. The degree of change possible depends upon the piano's design and condition.

MINOR REPAIRS

Because most of the moving parts of a piano are either wood or felt, they wear with time and sometimes break. Most minor repairs can be made in the home at the time of tuning. Occasionally parts have to be specially ordered and replaced later. Our repair rate varies as it depends on type of damage. For major repairs such as string replacement, action reconditioning, and others, click here or click on the Major Repairs link located on the top menu.

FENDER RHODES

PRE-AMP/AMP REPAIRS

We also repair Fender Rhodes Preamps and Amplifiers for the following Fender Rhodes models:

  • Fender Rhodes Mark I, and II

  • Suitcase Models (1969-1983)

  •  Mark I and II Stage Piano

- Our rates for minor electronic repairs is $65/hour.

- Preamps: For a complete restoration a non-functional Pre-Amp $185

Power Amplifier Modules: The Suitcase model has two amp modules which each control two set of speakers. The most common power amp failure is in the output transistors, especially since they were germanium, which has a higher leakage then silicone. If this is the case we recommend a silicone conversion which does not change the original tone of the instrument and it last longer than the germanium transistors which are no longer in production. Our rate for the silicone conversion is $150 per module.

Let us know if you have any other questions about the electronics of your Rhodes. For any other Fender Rhodes services (restoration/reconditioning services) you should contact Nathan Smith at 214-934-3916 (call or txt).
